Learn Tankō Bushi, a Bon dance rooted in the coal-mining communities of Fukuoka, in a beginner-friendly group led by Sugiyama Akiko, a Natori-certified Nihon Buyō dancer. The project is part of a collaboration with the Japan Association in the UK’s 30th anniversary year.
Practices and performance
Practice sessions take place in The Hall at Japan House London on Sunday 23 August and Sunday 20 September, 14:00-15:00. The group is expected to perform at Japan Matsuri in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 4 October; the public performance time and meeting arrangements have not yet been confirmed; check the event page closer to the date.
No previous dance experience is needed. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for light movement; attendance at both practices is strongly encouraged for people planning to perform. Around 25 participants are expected, depending on bookings.
Tickets, age rules and access
The official page now marks the performance group Fully booked (23 August – 4 October) with a Join waiting list option. A separate standalone workshop series for those who just want to learn the dance without performing is also offered, though it is currently fully booked too. The £10 fee includes both practices and the group performance; tickets are non-refundable. Under-16s must attend with an adult. Filming or photography may take place.
