Japan House London’s first photography exhibition brings together Kawada Kikuji and Iwane Ai for the first time in the UK project from the team behind Kyoto’s Kyotographie International Photography Festival. Two remaining Spotlight Gallery Talks take a close look at a single work or series, with a short introduction, audience Q&A and time to explore the exhibition afterwards.

Exhibition context
Kyotographie: Kawada Kikuji x Iwane Ai runs until 18 October at The Gallery. Kawada’s work includes Chizu (The Map), Los Caprichos and The Last Cosmology; Iwane’s includes Kipuka and A New River. The exhibition uses large projections and prints, and is the artists’ first joint presentation.
Kawada, born in 1933, co-founded the VIVO collective and received the Photographic Society of Japan’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Iwane, born in 1975, received the Kimura Ihei and Ina Nobuo awards in 2019, among other honours. The exhibition is directed by Kyotographie’s Lucille Reyboz and Nakanishi Yūsuke, marking the festival team’s first UK project.
Visiting Japan House
Exhibition admission is free, with booking recommended at busy times. The Gallery is open Monday–Saturday 10:00–20:00 and Sundays/Bank Holidays 12:00–18:00. Be aware of low lighting, fast-moving slides and imagery referring to war, natural disasters, death and nudity. Photography or filming may take place during events.
